Sustained Implementation

All of this effort in planning will be for naught if the plan, and the planning principles inherent in this document, are not sustained over time with a vigor of process and a clarity of purpose. While the comprehensive plan identifies locations of buildings such that they are primarily framing a new network of open space, and the design guidelines outline a series of principles to be followed in the creation of these buildings and spaces, they must be implemented in a way that is financially feasible and technically sound. Therefore, the implementation plan outlines an incremental process to put in place a series of new buildings and spaces to create the interconnected coherent community to which Emory aspires.

The implementation plan addresses both the timing, phasing and cost of new capital building projects, and a series of new open space projects. The open space projects begin with the conversion of Asbury Circle and Pierce Drive from a car-dominated place to a place dominated by people. It further develops a network of smaller paths and quadrangles off of Asbury and Pierce, connecting the campus east to west, as well as new open space developments along Emory's perimeter, primarily at North Decatur and Clifton Roads. By following this plan, Emory can transform itself, building upon the gains already achieved through the planning process itself.
