Plan
Overall Project Approach and ProcessEmory's Campus Plan must be Emory-Based, growing out of observations and principles which are inherent in the spirit, culture and setting of Emory. These principles are then the foundation of a conceptual plan that, once agreed upon, can be tested through a series of precinct studies ultimately yielding a total comprehensive plan supported by guidelines for buildings and grounds and a process that will ensure effective and sustained implementation. |
Inception |
The initiative for a campus plan, the development of a five-phase process designed to produce the Emory Campus Plan, and the people involved in the process. |
Observations |
The Observations phase, a process of looking, walking, and listening, began in July 1996, and involved more than 100 meetings with over 1100 people, aimed at producing a set of Guiding Principles. Among the sections available are the History of the Campus, from its founding in Oxford, Georgia, to the present; a detailed Analysis of Place; a Values Platform, including numerous quotes from staff, students, and faculty; and Guiding Principles. |
Concept Plan |
Best described as the sketch before a painting, the Concept Plan provides a broad physical framework for campus development. Begun in April 1997, the Concept Plan now embodies the values, principles, program needs, and physical capacities of the campus. |
Precinct StudiesUniversity Apts. |
Breaking the campus into smaller "precincts" allows the concepts to be studied and tested at a larger scale and in a finer grain of detail. The text accompanying each precinct details how the primary themes of the concept plan are addressed in each area. |
Comprehensive Plan |
Bringing back together the various precinct plans into one concise recognizable product, the Comprehensive Plan will be the basic reference document for physical planning. This will be the standard by which future thoughts and ideas for campus development will be tested. |
Design Guidelines |
Architectural and landscape design guidelines will be developed as part of the campus planning effort to provide tools for managing the aesthetic character of campus development. This information will also be linked to Technical Standards & Guidelines which are being developed concurrently within Facilities Management. |
Implementation |
While several prototype implementation elements are already underway, long term implementation will be managed through the costing of various components of the plan and phasing the work over time as funding is made available. Similar to the campus plan which must be flexible to accommodate changing needs, the phased implementation plan must allow for changes in the economics of the University. |
