University Apartments
(East Campus)

University Apartments is clearly one of the great opportunities for Emory's future. As depicted in this precinct study, this is envisioned as a new academic village, connected physically to the main campus. The creation of this new academic village reuses a significant portion of the existing roadway system, but at the same time demolishes all of the existing Garden Apartment housing. The only remaining building then would be the new lodge structures and the high rise apartment building. The creation of this village is formed through a network of buildings and interconnected open spaces to create a walking environment, including new housing for both undergraduate and graduate students. Interspersed within the housing are areas for programmed and non-programmed recreation, playgrounds (for children of married students), and parking. It is intended that the organization of facilities will allow inclusion of classroom space, computer labs and study spaces, with flexibility for residential colleges to be developed.

The housing proposed is sited to allow privacy, as there are other public uses and visitors to East Campus. Common functions such as a new recreation facility are located toward the center of the site and connected through a walking network to the housing. Adjacent to this would be a swim facility and tennis courts. Also located on axis with this facility would be a new soccer field.

Another major component is a new child care facility. This is located for easy access off of Clairmont Road while also maintaining an appropriate degree of privacy and security. Also incorporated in the plan are the necessary buildings for maintenance and overall serviceability of this village.

Last is the inclusion of a new 1,500-car parking deck which would take traffic off of Clairmont and be serviced by a shuttle bus through a shuttle-bus-only road along the southernmost edge of Lullwater, bridging the tracks at Turman Dorm. Limited surface parking is also shown to service visitors to any of the facilities mentioned, as well as visitors who may be interested in accessing Lullwater.
