Facilities Management and Laundry Site |
The area immediately south of the train tracks, which currently houses the Facilities Management buildings and sheds, surface parking, Steam Plant and the laundry site, represents one of the great land banks for the University's future. With the removal of these functions to more remote sites, opportunities exist for a new 2,000 car parking deck, which would be below the level of Fraternity Drive. This deck could then be accessed from a new bridge which would extend from Houston Mill Road across the CSX tracks, as well as from the extended Peavine Creek Drive, which can be accessed from Old Briarcliff. Atop this deck would be a new quadrangle of green space which would also establish a reconstituted ground plane for the creation of new academic, research and/or housing buildings. The laundry site is of equal potential given its size and topography. Specifically, another smaller parking structure could be located below this building with the potential to add a series of new functions on top of this deck including the bookstore, the faculty club, teaching center, and other interdisciplinary centers which are currently disenfranchised and located throughout the University, in "buildings" ranging from trailers to sheds. The laundry site, sitting at the head of the new Asbury Circle passagiata/spine would connect to a new, better-defined space between the DUC and the Woodruff P. E. Center. This new central piazza could be marked by both a new fountain and public sculpture and would be bounded by a new addition to the Woodruff P. E. Center, creating a clearer entry and clear public space. This addition could house administrative offices for PE and expanded student services needs that are currently overcrowded in the DUC. Additionally, the plan proposes to build a new roof on top of this building to enclose the tennis courts, and an addition to the west for general-purpose space. Also shown in this precinct is an addition and renovation to the Anatomy/Physiology complex to create a new home for the Medical School. Adjacent to this complex would be a new quadrangle created through the removal of the surface parking between Longstreet dormitory and the DUC. This new quadrangle would become one of the new central and formal green spaces for this part of the campus with a direct relationship to the bridge that connects to the research triangle. |
